A deck can transform your outdoor living area, making it a perfect place to relax and entertain. But how do you choose the best decking material for your budget? Here are some tips from Bunnings Workshop members. Member Hadi built a low-level Merbau deck over concrete in just three weekends.

Easy to Assemble

If you’re looking for a simple DIY decking solution, look no further than Good Times modular decking kits. These kits come with pre-assembled frames and decking panels to make constructing your deck easy and cost effective. They can be used in a variety of spaces, but the most suitable location is one that is flat and has adequate drainage.

The timber is pre-treated with a mix of chemicals to protect it from attack from insects and decay that cause fungus. However, the treatment may not penetrate all the way through the timber, and cut ends are prone to attack. To reduce the risk of these problems, use a timber preparation product to remove tannins and oils from the cut ends.

Then, apply a decking oil to the timber. This will enhance natural colour and add a level of protection against weathering. Decking oils also offer a higher level of water repellency than standard stains. The choice of oil you select depends on your desired style and budget.

Easy to Maintain

While Ekodeck does not require the oiling and painting that timber decks do, it is an outdoor building material and will need a general clean from time to time. This is especially true if your deck is exposed to the elements and has people (and paws) walking over it every day.

This will help to prevent the build-up of dirt and mud, which can cause the boards to crack and split over time. It will also ensure that the boards retain their colour.

Alternatively, you can use a stain to protect your decking. Stains work to enhance timber colour and offer a high level of UV protection, but they do not offer as much protection as an oil-based product.

It is important to scrub the timber with a good timber preparation product before staining, such as Cabot’s New Timber Prep. This will remove any leeching tannins from the old timber and even out the surface for a smoother application of the stain.

Durable

While it’s not as long-lasting as a composite material, pressure treated pine decking is inexpensive and easy to work with. It’s also an environmentally friendly option. However, it’s important to note that it requires regular maintenance and is susceptible to rot, insects, and mold.

Workshop member Neo19 built this low-level Merbau deck on a concrete slab for less than $6000. The deck took four days to build and transformed the backyard into a relaxing space for entertaining friends and family.

My company has been rejuvenating decks for 12 years and can vouch that Cabots Aqua Deck is a great product IF the end-user prepares the timber correctly and applies it within the range of ideal weather conditions. Generally speaking if a clear finish is applied on top of wet or damp decking then it will revert back to its natural colour due to the oils and tannins in the timber. So I would advise waiting for the decking to dry completely before applying a clear finish.

Affordable

Building a deck can seem like an impossible project, especially if you don’t have the right tools, knowledge or money. However, with the right guidance from a specialist decking company (like Ezy Decking) it can be far simpler than you might think.
