Steel Deck – A Cost-Effective Solution For Steel Roof Construction

Steel roof deck, or metal deck as it is more commonly known, is a key structural component used in steel construction. It combines an attractive appearance with a high strength-to-weight ratio to decrease material handling, storage and erection costs.

This is typically required when the steel form deck is to be used as permanent formwork and is not contributing to the final concrete slab design (e.g. in a car park). In this case the engineer will design the concrete slab to include appropriate quantities of in-situ re-bar. This will ensure that the concrete is designed to support a load and not the steel form deck.

4. Cost

Steel deck is a cost-effective solution for floor construction. Since it’s designed as a diaphragm, it transfers loads from the frame to the concrete and reduces the size of the structure’s foundation requirements. It can also be used as a permanent form for concrete and can achieve up to a four-hour fire rating.

Because steel prices are highly volatile, it is essential to get a quote for metal decking as soon as possible. Manufacturers have different equipment, and some may be able to produce metal deck more quickly than others. However, it’s important to keep in mind that the overall cost of a project can fluctuate depending on how long the project takes to construct and the materials needed for completion.
