PVC Decking

Manufacturers create pvc decking with different colors and textures. Some are designed to look like real wood, while others have a more generic plastic appearance. PVC doesn’t require staining or re-staining and typically lasts longer than composites.

Both PVC and composite will expand and contract as temperatures change, so it’s important to follow installation guidelines for spacing between boards.

Durability

PVC decking provides solutions that homeowners have wanted for years. It does not require annual sanding, staining or sealing and comes in many different colors and wood imitations. It can be used to create a variety of different looks, from rustic or natural to contemporary and modern.

Pvc also does not promote the growth of mold or mildew. This is a great advantage over Composite, which can often be prone to this problem due to its organic nature.

Another benefit is that it does not splinter like natural wood, protecting you and your loved ones from painful injuries. The splinters caused by composite and wood decking can be dangerous, especially for small children and animals. This means that you can rest easy knowing that your pvc decking will be safe for everyone to use without fear of injury. Some chemicals such as bug sprays and suntan lotions can stain Composite, so it is a good idea to avoid these types of products on your PVC deck.

Low Maintenance

Plastic or PVC is used in a variety of applications and products including white piping, roofing shingles, packaging, electrical conduits, and automobile parts. It is a very durable, fade and stain resistant material that requires minimal maintenance.

Unlike wood, PVC does not develop stains and is easy to clean with a hose or soft-bristle brush. It also resists mildew, mold, and other fungus. It does not splinter, so it is safe for children and pets.

It does absorb some moisture and may expand or contract depending on weather conditions, but this can be minimized by ensuring proper installation and using lighter colored boards. You should also ensure that the board runs are separated by a “divider” or “splitter” board to prevent excessive expansion and contraction. In addition, it is unlikely to be damaged by any chemical interaction such as with bug sprays or sunblock. It is also impermeable and will not rot or attract termites and other wood-eating insects.

Variety of Colors

PVC decks and railing are available in a wide variety of colors to complement your house. Whether you prefer warm shades with red undertones or cooler colors like blue or green, you can find a match with these products.

Both capped PVC and composite offer color choices that mimic wood grain and some manufacturers even offer multi-tonal coloring to look more natural. Capped PVC has the advantage of resisting moisture better than uncapped composite, making it a better choice for waterside properties that are prone to mold or mildew growth.

The shade you choose may also have a direct impact on the amount of heat the deck absorbs and retains during hot weather. If you live in a warmer climate, opting for a lighter shade could help your deck stay up to 30% cooler than if you used a darker color.

Easy Installation

A combination of overzealous marketing by composite manufacturers and wishful thinking by homeowners led to unrealistic expectations when these products first appeared. But recent advances in PVC decking, including adding a plastic skin to composites and offering all-plastic (cellular) options, have brought the industry closer to delivering on the promise of low-maintenance wood-like decking.

Both PVC and composites need to be intermittently swept or hosed off to remove debris and unclog gaps. They also need to be cleaned up to prevent staining from spills and tree sap.

Because PVC contains no organic materials, it resists insect infestation. It is also a much safer alternative to pressure-treated wood, which has been linked to cancer, heart disease and reproductive problems. PVC also is made from recycled plastic, including old milk, water and detergent bottles. It’s available in a wide range of colors and styles, some mimicking exotic wood species. Some are molded with a wood grain while others are textured. Some are square-shouldered, installable like traditional wood planks; others have grooved edges that snap together and fasten to joists with hidden fasteners.
